About Thaw
Thaw is a guide to genuine wellness and community saunas across the UK: 504 of them, each checked against its own website. It’s an independent personal project.
What’s listed
Real sauna experiences anyone can book or turn up to: wood-fired, lakeside, coastal, social, community and city bathhouse saunas. Gym saunas, hotel spa add-ons for guests, private home saunas, hire-only mobile saunas and adult venues are left out. Thaw doesn’t try to list every sauna in the UK; choosing is the point.
How listings are checked
New saunas start as leads from the British Sauna Society’s map. Each one is then read on its own website, and only what that site publishes goes in: heat types, how many saunas, who it’s for, opening hours, booking and Instagram. Nothing is guessed. Anything a sauna doesn’t publish is left empty and shown as not published.
Most listings were added by scanning each sauna’s website and reviewing what the scan found, so heat types and sauna counts can be incomplete. Opening hours are only added when a site publishes a clear weekly timetable, which 82 do so far; many saunas sell sessions by booking instead, so their booking page has the times. Every listing shows the date it was last checked, and links are checked every month.
About 400 saunas from the directory aren’t listed yet, mostly because their websites couldn’t be read or ask not to be read by automated tools, or they don’t have one.
Photos
Photos come from each sauna’s own website and are credited to it under the photo.
Featured saunas
A few saunas are featured: shown first, with their name on the map. These are sponsored placements, and each one is labelled Sponsored on the map and on its page. Being featured doesn’t change how a listing is checked or what it says. How featuring works.
Corrections and suggestions
If something’s wrong, open the sauna on the map and use “Something wrong? Tell us”. To add a sauna, use Suggest a sauna. Each one is checked against the sauna’s own website before anything changes.
